Cinnamon Raisin Naan

Fry bread or naan, you decide.

(Note: by the time this recipe post we will have moved to Round Top, Texas. Luckily I planned a few post ahead not knowing where we were going to be living while building a house. Hope to continue my food journey in Round Top with old and new friends to have to dinner.)

There’s nothing better than some hot homemade bread and it seems like a lot of people started experimenting with bread baking during the pandemic. Whether it is a biscuit, a fruited quick bread, homemade French/Italian loaves, a pan of cornbread or hot naan right off the griddle, if it’s fresh out of the oven/griddle then you are in for a treat.

Indian fry bread is very similar to naan except it doesn’t have the yogurt in the ingredients. I decided to try and fry some of these just to see what I liked the best and the “fried” ones won. But, on the other hand, the griddle ones were brushed with melted butter on both sides and then shook in a bag of cinnamon sugar and were delicious too.

The first time I ever had fry bread was at the Cheesecake factory about 20 years ago. They had a sandwich back then that was on an Indian fry bread and it was so good. Can’t you just imagine a burger on fry bread or maybe a grilled chicken sandwich with tomato and avocado or even using it to pile on some good egg salad or pimento cheese.

If you are still quarantined to your house and you run out of bread, give this a try with or without the raisins/cinnamon sugar; either way it’s a nice bread recipe.

BLAST FROM THE PAST: This Watermelon Amuse is a cute, tasty appetizer for those fresh watermelons that should start showing up in the markets.

Dissolve the yeast in the water.

Mix the eggs and yogurt.

Add in the flour.

Stir in the golden raisins.

Roll out really thin and cook or oiled griddle until light brown spots appear and then flip and cook on other side. Brush with melted butter when done and shake in a bag of cinnamon sugar.

If you want to try frying the naan, put about 1″ of oil in skillet and heat to 350° and fry until brown on both sides. then remove and shake in cinnamon sugar.

Cinnamon Raisin Naan

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 2 tsp instant yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 3 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour more or less
  • 2 Tbsp melted butter
  • 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 3/4 c. golden raisins or regular raisins

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water, yeast, and sugar in a large bowl; let sit for five minutes or till bubbly. Add olive oil, yogurt, egg, salt and 2 cups of flour. Stir till smooth.
  2. Add enough flour to make a soft dough. Knead a few times on a floured counter until smooth.
  3. Place dough in a greased bowl. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, 30-60 minutes.
  4. Cut dough into eight pieces. On a floured surface, roll out each piece into a 6" circle.
  5. Preheat a skillet to medium heat.
  6. Add a little oil or non-stick spray to the skillet. Cook each circle for 2-3 minutes or until bubbly and golden brown on the bottom. Flip over and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  7. Brush the top of each naan with melted butter.

Recipe Notes

I also tried frying some in about 1" of oil heated to about 350°. We liked those best but if you don't want to mess with frying the grilled ones are also delicious plus they get brushed with all that melted butter and shook in the cinnamon sugar.
