Wish I knew this Granny.
I don’t often get foods from companies to try out for the blog so I was excited to get a note from Darlene, PPR Communications, Granny Hester’s Sweet Potato Biscuit asking me if I would like to try their sweet potato biscuits. The company is doing some testing in our area in Sam’s Club and she came across my blog. Their sweet potato biscuits are already being sold there and at our Trader Joes.
I love their story of how the biscuit recipe came about. Granny Hester came up with this recipe while experimenting for the perfect biscuit for her husband before he left for the Navy in WWII. The recipe was eventually handed down (like all good grandmothers do) to a granddaughter who started making these biscuits for family and friends and now works out of a 50,000 sq. ft. building (former sock mill) in Ft. Payne, Alabama.
I’ve done sweet potato biscuits before for an appetizer so I couldn’t wait to try out their biscuits with a couple of other recipes. For my first try I used the frozen biscuit, split it and then grilled it on a panini grill and topped with some pulled pork, slaw and pepper rings for a fancy slider for New Year’s Eve. It was really good that way because the biscuit got kind of crisp, almost like a chip.
My second try was using the biscuits with ham and orange marmalade; I made these many times when I catered. Cooked biscuits, split, top with ham and orange marmalade then back in the oven to warm up.
On Granny Hester’s site they have a Sweet Potato Cinnamon Roll made from their biscuits so that was definitely going to be breakfast one Saturday morning and those are in the opening picture.
If you come across Granny Hester’s Sweet Potato Biscuits in one of your markets, you should give them a try. I have about 2 more left to bake so those are getting baked today and top with some ham and orange marmalade for my husband to eat while watching football.
How about this — Sweet potato biscuits with ham and Swiss cheese warmed in oven or a warm-out-of-the-oven sweet potato biscuit with some maple butter smeared inside; and then you have to try a sweet potato biscuit with some ham salad on the inside; or years I have done a sweet potato biscuit with some sliced ham and orange marmalade and then warmed in the oven for a great little savory appetizer.
I honestly have to say that these are as good, if not better, as the ones I have made from scratch for years. They have a more sweet potato taste and softer texture than my recipe and all you have to do is open the freezer and take them out. I would like to hear (in comment section below) if you have other ways of using sweet potato biscuit dough or the cooked sweet potato biscuits.
GH biscuits were sent to me by Dreamland Bar-B-Que. I was expecting a package of biscuits and Dreamland sent me their ribs, slaw, beans, sauce, chopped chicken and pork and I cannot wait to try their products.

It is a wonderful pasta dish that can be used as the main dish with a salad and crusty bread or as a pasta course with another other entree. I hope you will give it a try, I will be making it again real soon.
Keep frozen until you are ready to bake.
Cut the sweet potato biscuits in quarters, dip in the cinnamon sugar mixture. Put in buttered pan and sprinkled with some chopped pecans. My only mistake here was baking in a Le Crueset pan with high sides. It took twice as long to bake the cinnamon rolls. Just use any metal baking pan with an edge.
After baking I mixed up about 1 cup powdered sugar with 2 teaspoons of pure maple syrup and a tiny big of milk to make a glaze that was drizzled over the pan full of rolls.
For this experiment I cut the Granny Hester biscuits in half and grilled on my panini press. I had a little trouble with them sticking to the wax paper when I tried to roll out, so after the first one, I simply cut in half, mashed a little and put on a sprayed grill and cooked until they were brown and crisp.
I topped with a little pulled pork bar-b-q, slaw and a few pickled banana pepper rings. I liked these because the bun made with the sweet potato biscuits got crisp. But, if you don’t own a panini press, just try doing your bar-b-q on a baked sweet potato biscuits with some hot sauce. You will love the contract of the sweet and hot.
- 8-10 Granny Hester's Sweet Potato Biscuits
- 3 TBSP butter, melted
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 TBSP butter, melted and cooled
- 2-3 tsp. pure maple syrup
- 1-2 TBSP milk
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray/grease 8in baking dish.
- Cut each biscuits into 4 pieces. Set aside. In a mixing bowl, mix together brown sugar and cinnamon. Add biscuits pieces and toss to coat well. Put pieces into greased baking dish. Pour melted butter evenly over biscuits. Bake 20-25 minutes or until baked through.
- Mix glaze ingredients until smooth.
- Drizzle/Pour glaze over slightly cooled biscuits

I love Granny Hester’s Sweet Potato Biscuits but Publix in my area is no longer carrying them.

I have made my sweet potato biscuit recipe for years. I think it came out of a Southern Living Cookbook.
