Mimi’s Sticky Chicken

If you don’t know Mimi’s Sticky Chicken, you need to get acquainted.

If you google “Mimi’s Sticky Chicken” you will come up with 21,000 results.  I came across this recipe probably about ten years ago. I never knew who Mimi was, I just knew I loved the recipe. If you haven’t come across the recipe in your Internet searches I would be amazed.

When I think of chickens (and we eat our fair share of the two legged creatures) a story my husband use to tell us always comes to mind. He remembers going out to his grandmother’s house (Ma Michie’s farm) and her chasing the chickens around the yard until she caught one. She would wring it’s neck, put it in a big black cast iron kettle in the yard (we now have that kettle in our back yard with flowers planted in it) and boil it just long enough that she could pluck the feathers off it. Then she would fry it up and I’m sure it was some of the best fried chicken my husband ever had. She was also known to bbq some goat.

Basil Pecan Pesto

My first harvest of basil.

Moved in, unpacked, art hung. I just finished two big projects I’ve been putting off for 4 months and that is reorganizing/labelling my craft closet and relabelling my 40+ spice jars so they all match. Next up the outside. We have a temporary outdoor kitchen started and enough that PapaG can get his home bbqing done but not what he has planned out in his head. 

We have started a few plants and herbs in pots so far. A bay leaf tree that I paid a small fortune for and it’s dying or at least half of it is dying (as of today it is almost gone). The herbs on the other hand are going crazy. We have so much basil and every week I take a cutting a start rooting in water so we have even more. Don’t ask me what I’m going to do with all of this but for right now I made pesto.

I love making pecan (or walnut) pesto because it is a lot less expensive than pine nuts and I have about 20 pounds of pecans in my freezer that my sister sent me.

What do you do after a hard day’s work?

I’ve always loved cooking, taking cooking classes, watching cooking competitions, talking food, recreating a dish that I have enjoyed from a restaurant and teaching someone how to make something special. So, even today, in my old age (ha) after helping out in the kitchen at our son and D-I-L’s brewery for 6-8 hours I’ll come home and watch a good “food movie” or some of my new favorite food shows on Magnolia network or even sit down and search the internet for some new recipes. 

One of my favorite things to do is to look at menus from restaurants where friends or family have dined. You can’t imagine how many ideas I have gotten from reading menus and unless it is an over the top restaurant with like super complicated foods and techniques, it’s pretty easy to come up with a recipe.

This particular recipe is from Stephanie Izard (The Girl and the Goat Restaurant in Chicago). She won Top Chef competition in their fourth season and now has four restaurants. (Her green bean recipe is still one of my all time favorite green bean recipes.) My son, Scott, is always sending me new things to try. I would have to say that he is a lot more adventurous than I am. I have not tried his tahini brownies and probably won’t but I will try almost anything else he recommends. When he showed me this recipe I think he had already made it twice so I knew it must be good.
